After the 22 minutes into The Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart (Concrete Records July 17, 2018) the new inspiration of the Ecuadorian Doom Metal Band TOTAL DEATH, you could find yourself asking where this new piece of metal is headed to ….and you’ll ask yourself the same question 5 minutes later, and again 5 minutes after that, and probably a few more times throughout this 3 songs MCD.
There’s no soft build here, from the very beginning I was Shocked track after track for the immediate crescendo of the sorrowful melody, It is extremely intense to feel the emotion from the voices and the lyrics are reflections and transpositions of their dark thoughts, intense emotions, fears and experiences they have had in their lives.
Arruinado makes me feel like if I was recovering from an injury and I was stuck in an obscure cold apartment, looking outside through the dirty glass windows, watching the people passing by, finding myself yelling at them to not leave me alone!, but nobody listens, nobody cares!, I’m abandoned to my own destiny.
Espuma de Ausencias, the second track of three, is a cosmic preparation to enter in a solitary sub world where the most intense light is the one that comes out from our own eyes. Brutal, raw, intensely emotional song with guitars crawling like snakes. Arturo Vargas and Ider Farfán have created here an eyesore with their voices, despair, repentance, loneliness, internal pain, everything to complement this wall of sound.
Really is impressive and daring how these individuals, were inspired to create dark, innovative music that is evocative to and expressive of the contents of their feelings, a risky decision that nobody is eager to take. What direction is taking their music now? only them know where it is going to.
But wait! we’re getting there. The Beauty comes last, with exquisite malevolence, La Cura, a gleaming work on the guitars, the sadness in their notes gives me a chilling melancholy. Here TOTAL DEATH plays an original yet hard to swallow mutant doom style, with highly Avant Garde elements, an intrusive tonality of Ecuadorian Yarabi shines halfway.
The music has an ice-cold, oppressed retro-taste and a slight resemblance with something I could not remember (never happen to you?) but is there and I feel completely comfortable with it.
I want to mention the colossal work of guitars by introducing sounds typical of a sad and melancholic musical culture like the Ecuadorian. Here Luis Fernando Orquera makes Pasillos and Yarabis (Ecuadorian Folk Music) shine with their own light, putting this way a personal touch on this great work. But wait, the Danny Molina’s work, is also immense with the lyricals and the compact sound in the drums, Carlos Moreno perfect with the bass, Jose Miguel Santelices putting what was needed with the keyboards and well, Ider Farfan, brutal in the voices. The production is at level of perfection, well it was on the hands of a master, Dan Swanö.
Well, I don’t want to go too far with this, I just recommend Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart to all the followers of the sacred metal of death because it’s worth it. That’s it!, Finito!!!
